Abstract
This paper demonstrates how President Mahmoud Ahmahdinejad of Iran, uses avoidance strategies in his hearing with CNN journalist Piers Morgan. It applies some of the theories put forward by Janet Bavelas and putz bull on avoidance-avoidance conflicts which result in apostasy. Bavelas argues that when a speaker unit is faced with answering a question with no substantiating results, a person exit circumvent that question utilize an avoidance strategy cognize as equivocation. Peter Bull expounds this by stating that the underlying reason a person equivocates is to treasure both their negative and positive face. Furthermore, Bull illustrates that avoidance-avoidance conflicts and equivocation be a result of the framework of political interviews. This paper will consider these findings by Bavelas and Bull to evaluate why Ahmadinejad uses equivocation strategies when answering questions posed by Morgan. Can we say that he is just another politician who seems to elude difficult questions with compute shrewdness? Is he only doing what is required as a politician in order to save his face as well as that of his country and his allies?
Furthermore, given the mental synthesis of a political interview, are his equivocations unavoidable?
1. Introduction
After honoring and listening to several interviews with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad by various American journalists, it became evident that it is his common practice to evade many of the proposed questions by his interviewers.
