Depression 1930S

At 5:00 on Tuesday morning total heat pop left his home to walk 15 blocks to the nearest stem of nutriment at the Good Samaratan Church on jackboot Avenue. A too familiar scene, Henry left his married woman telling her that he was exit to procure some food and would be back when he was successful. Henry, his wife Elizabeth and their five children Sarah 13, Clara 12, he-goat 9, Henry Jr. 3 and Lucy 2, all live in Clear Water, Ontario. Like many others the Downing’s had invested the majority of their life savings in the stock trade leaving the rest in a bank that they thought was secure. On October 29th 1929, infamously known as Black Tuesday, the stock market crashed and left them with nothing not even the means to obtain food. Now they must depend on the good go out of the nearest church to provide them with food which is often just now to none.
Due to the stock market crash,businesses and factories have come to a virtual standstill. Henry like a multitude of others has been move off from work the Clear Water Steel milling machinery with the opportunity for employment nowhere in sight. Do to these grievousships and the engage to provide for his family Henry applied for work at the rudimentary Ontario Relief Camp some 85 miles from the city.
Without money Henry’s five children have had to quit school.



Sarah and Clara, the two oldest preempt be seen around the city doing all manner of unrivalled jobs helping to bring pennies into the household. Elizabeth who worked for the Manchester‘s on Trinity Street, previous to Black Tuesday is,now unemployed. Although she is searching for work she must do so with her three youngest children in tow. Mrs. Downing considered sending her children to relative until they could wedge back on their feet. However being a high-flown and honorable Canadian that he is, Henry has totally refused the melodic theme stating that he will, himself, provide for his family and keep them together through these hard times.
