Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead, which is, a totalitarian and theocratic state that has replaced the United States of America. Handmaids were allotted to go past birth to chelaren for select couples who were unable to bear a child on their own. We learned to whisper almost without sound. In the semidarkness we would stretch forth out our arms, when the Aunts werent looking, and touch each others work force across space. We learned to lip-read, our heads flat on the beds, move sideways, watching each others mouths. (Atwood, 4).
All these women are very lonely and do not have the part to speak their minds. Offred is a bright, sensitive, and thoughtful woman, however as a narrator, she wished for a more active role in her story. I call up it would be very difficult for Atwood to portray her any other way in the story because as a reader, we are experiencing her life through her eyes. If Atwood changed Offreds character to a more tradition heroine, I dont believe readers would have as good of an understanding of what women had to go through back then. We learned that Offred was forced to have sex with the air force officer every month while his wife Serena Joy held her hands because the couple could not conceive one of their own.
