In Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck uses characters to portray a number of different themes, such as discrimination, lone breedss, friendship and ambition. The tommyrot is set in the 1930s, revealing the struggle aspectd by many Americans amid a deep financial depression. The main characters, George and Lennie, atomic number 18 itinerant farm workers who travel from place to place in desperate search of work as their only possible way of earning a living. They sh be a common hallucination with many others in their position; the American Dream. The idea is introduced by George during conversation with Lennie in the foremost chapter. They imagine a time that they are able to live off the fatta the lan and weart have to answer to anybody. As the plot line progresses, however, it becomes ever more obvious that in the reality, George and Lennie are in fact striving towards an unachievable feat in the mildew a dream that is unlikely to ever be realised.





Lennie is introduced in the first chapter as a huge man, shapeless of face and he is subsequently describe by George to be as strong as a bull. Yet we in short establish that Lennie is very childlike and he is later described by Slim to be jest like a kid. Steinbeck often describes Lennie in terms of an animal. In the first chapter Lennies characteristics are likened to that of a bear, he walked heavily, dragging his feet a little, the way a bear drags his paws. Animals are dangerous because they are innocent in the way that they lack the mental energy to act morally or understand right from wrong.
