Orsino is depicted as a homogeneousable character by Shakespeare. To what extent do you scoff with this statement?
I agree with this statement to a small extent. Shakespeare does not depict Orsino as a likeable character. Although Orsino is virtuous, he is melodramatic, chauvinistic and fickle-minded and hence he is not a likeable character.
Orsino is melodramatic because he exaggerates his adore for Olivia with various metaphors with no indication of the depth of his mania for her. Orsino spread abroads his attendants If medicine be the food of sexual love, play on and to give him wastefulness of it so that his appetite may sicken and so conk. Through these words, we can tell that the image of Orsinos love is something unwanted, something that comes upon people unexpectedly and that it is not easily avoided. Further more, Orsino describes his love like the sea which devours everything that stands in its way which is unrealistic as it is what he imagines it to be. Orsino described his love for Olivia as a predator, hounding him like a pack of cruel hounds and ca utilise endless suffering as he has become a victim of this game.
By using flowery language to describe his love for Olivia, we can tell that he is exaggerating most of the time that he is ironically more in love with the idea of being in love than being in love with Olivia. Perhaps, Shakespeare is hinting to the audience that Orsino is not sincere in his love for Olivia, which can be seen in the polish scene when he readily marries Viola after determination out her identity.
Orsino is fickle-minded as he is ruled by his emotions and changes his character very easily. Orsino began with demanding music but within a fewer minutes, he decides to not have it for tis not so smart now as it was before. From this, we can tell that he is very much ruled by his heart as he follows his emotions and wants things according to his whims and fancies.
