During the era in which Jane Austen wrote Pride and Prejudice, women had a very distinct role. T heritor role included get married and conceiving a baby boy to become the heir of her husbands estate. In Austens novel she depicts her distaff characters as the typical stereotype of that time. For example, the stereotypes of being quiet, smart, musically inclined, and attractive are depicted by Austen in her character, Jane. Austen also uses the characters Charlotte, Mrs. bennet, and Lydia, to treat women during this era for their obsession with money and marriage. By depicting her characters in such a way she shows how flawed and ridiculous her parliamentary law and their values were during that time.
For the white avens family, marriage seemed to occupy every perspective and action. The Bennets had five girls and the only person who could inherit Mr. Bennets estate was his closest male relative, Mr. Collins. So with this in mind, Mrs. Bennet put all her effort into finding her girls a desirable husband. Austen displays the importance of marriage for her society in the very startle line of her novel stating it is a true statement universally that a single man in possession of a unafraid fortune must be in want of a wife.
