Treatment strategies for epicene personed people has been beneath much debate and controversy since the 1960’s. People born with forked external genitals are often viewed as biologic accidents that need to be fixed (Money, 1975). According to Money, his protocol which consists of a team of professionals in consultation with parents, choose which gender to denominate an intersex child. To reduce the possibility of future adjustment problems or gender confusion, the physicians usually provide and/or hormonal treatments. Although there are serious questions about Money and his protocol, I do agree that as parents we should decide the best treatment for our children when they are born. The way we rear our children as infants will allow intersexed babies to separate into well adjusted people. Intersexed activist groups such as Intersex Society of North America (ISNA), argue that intesexed children should not be altered and that he or she can decide or choose such procedures later in life. However, I in person feel that waiting will cause more personal identity confusion and distress on a child that is already going thru an identity crisis by reaching puberty.
I would swear that my parents would be open with me throughout my childhood and my particular intersex condition.
Along with the hormone treatment, I would hope that my parents would feel that instruction and/or therapy would be needed so that as a family we would have all the knowledge necessary to deal with this issue. I would feel very disappointed if my parents were to hide my condition from me. If at a later point in my life I was having issues sexually I would have to pursue other agency of treatment. There is no factual evidence that infant cognitive process will prevent a child to grow up homosexual.
